About Cairo

Not only is Cairo one of the highest populated cities in the world, but also vibrant & chaotic - 6 lanes of traffic, no traffic lights, no lines on the road...donkeys, camels, bikes, cars, people everywhere! The smells of fresh garlic and pungent spices waft from all corners, sheesha pipes billowing in rickety back alleys and old men snoozing in their chairs.

The river Nile and the Pyramids are the only constants in this unique city. Life and Death reside side by side in the City of the Dead. Row upon row of clothing lines strung up between ancient tombs, children and dogs playing amidst the bones of ancestors. This is the essence of Cairo. Contradiction. The centuries old Pyramids staring out across a growing city with half built apartment blocks. The peaceful Nile river snaking past luxurious hotels built for pure entertainment. The age old Khan el Khalil market selling trinkets from Japan.

Cairo also has the best fast food in Africa! Kushari is a wonderful filling dish made from pasta, chickpeas and rice, with golden fried onions, tomato sauce and garlic oil. Absolute bliss during a hard day of pounding the dusty streets in search of 100% ylang-ylang perfume.

Floating down the river Nile in a felucca is a must. These small boats sail along at the mercy of the wind, no engines in sight! Of course you can hop on a cruise boat and enjoy the buffets and casinos, but nothing beats hearing the morning call to prayer whilst drifting along peacefully.

The people of this city is of course the heart and soul of it all. They are joyful, creative, persistent and could probably sell ice to an Eskimo. Be wary that you may lose your heart to this wonderful city and completely understand how the philosophers of old managed to while away many years contemplating the complexities of life, and Egyptian Espresso!

Weather in Cairo

Cairo has a very hot summer between May and October, and a mild winter from November to April. It is very dry, receiving on average only about a centimetre of rain a year, but it does have high humidity levels in summer. The city occasionally experiences dust storms brought by the sirocco hot winds that are characteristic of Egypt's climate in the month of April.
