Whilst living in the UK, I worked for ITV for several years. One of their head offices’ are based in Manchester where they produce the world's oldest and most watched television soap opera, Coronation Street. Manchester is very quick and easy to reach from London, but with flights readily available from all over the world, there is no excuse to miss the 2nd most visited city in the United Kingdom. It’s not all about London!

At the turn of the 19th century there was a boom in the textile manufacturing industry during the Industrial Revolution and Manchester became the world's first industrialised city. It was also the site of the first railway station and where scientists first split the atom.
Manchester has many different architectural styles, ranging from Victorian to modern contemporary. The Beetham tower is the highest residential building in Western Europe and Manchester Town Hall is considered one of the most important Victorian buildings in the United Kingdom. The gothic, sandstone John Rylands Library is situated on Deansgate and was
commissioned by Cuban-born Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her philanthropist, textile manufacturer husband. There are many other great monuments remaining from the Industrial Revolution, like Ancouts on Anita Street, previously known as ‘workshop of the world’ and Peel Tower with exceptional views of Greater Manchester and beyond.

Heaton Park is the largest green space in Manchester, from a packed events programme to the golf course, there is enough going on here to keep you busy for a whole day.
Manchester has some excellent shopping too, from the luxurious Harvey Nichols to Manchester Arndale’s one mile long shopping circuit; you are spoilt for choice when picking up gifts for friends and family. You can even go for a cooking class at the snazzy Zouk, well known for its authentic Indian and Pakistani cuisine.
With a long list of bands hailing from Manchester such as The Chemical Brothers and The Ting Tings, it is no wonder that this city is also well known for its bustling night life. With some excellent, affordable hotels, you can go ahead and have a proper northern, barmy evening!
Situated in the North West of England, Manchester sees a fair bit of rain throughout the year, with warm summers and cold winters.
I found the people of Manchester to be very friendly and easy to chat to (some other cities are not really known for their friendliness) and you are sure to come away with many new friend requests on Facebook!
